If you are one of the millions of people that are suffering from insomnia, then you should know that there are some things you can do to make it less of a problem. While many turn to prescription medications, they don’t always work and they can have a big impact on your health and your pocketbook. Not to worry, there are other ways to combat sleeplessness and we will look at some of the best ones in this article.
There are many causes of insomnia, with hormonal imbalance and stress being two of the biggest culprits. While the items below will help in a lot of cases, your case may be more severe. If so, then see your doctor as a prescription may be your best alternative. But, before you go that route, try these things first:
1. Loosen up – Okay, I’ll be the first to admit that this is easier said than done, but it is the first step to beating insomnia. We all have things to worry about, but you have to find a way to let those things go before bedtime. In fact, by purposely forgetting them before retiring for the evening, you may actually solve those problems while you sleep. However, if you go to bed with the intention of solving a hard problem, then your subconscious will work differently by trying to keep you awake to solve. It all sounds counter-intuitive, but you have the best chance of solving your problems by not worrying about them before bed. At the same time, it’s vital that you don’t worry about how much sleep you will or won’t get. Focusing on your insomnia is about the surest way to have insomnia. The key is to do things to help you unwind, to help you shift from the cares of the day to preparing to sleep. Continue reading

There are many new migraine headache treatments available that can be both safe and effective. Natural treatments for migraine headaches are usually safer and cheaper than traditional pain medications. And in many instances they can relieve pain just as well or even better than prescription or non-prescription drugs. The possibility of a negative reaction to a safe and natural migraine headache treatment is still there, but it is less with most natural treatment methods than it is with pain-relieving medications.

Every body is made up of a mixture of chemicals. Every person produces certain chemicals in their body so that they will be able to function at their best. Histamines will increase gastric secretion and dilate the capillaries. Insulin is secreted by the pancreas and helps regulate the blood sugar levels. Hormones are produced by the body for many different functions. Adrenaline (epinephrine) is produced in response to stress. Every body is unique and produces different chemicals in differing amounts. When a person takes aspirin (a chemical) for their migraine headaches it changes the chemical make-up of that person’s body.

You’ve always heard that when two chemicals, in the same amounts, at the same temperature, etc. are mixed together they will cause the same reaction. That may be true, but when one chemical (such as aspirin) is taken by two separate people their reactions will never be exactly the same because no two people have identical chemicals in their body. One person taking aspirin will not have the same reaction as someone else taking aspirin. And it’s the same with natural migraine headache treatments. Since no two people are identical no two people will respond exactly the same to a treatment method for migraine headaches.

So just because one migraine headache treatment does not work for one person does not mean it won’t work for your migraine headaches. There are many effective alternatives to taking medications when it comes to relieving migraine headaches. You just have to try one for yourself to see if it will work for you. Continue reading

I grew up in the Rocky Mountain west among ranchers, hunters, and meat eaters. I knew people who subsisted almost entirely on beef, lamb, and wild game and eschewed vegetables except for potatoes. I like meat. No, I love meat. Since I became aware of the world around me, and especially since I became a doctor, I recognized the health issues associated with transfats and a heavy fat and carbohydrate diet. My father died when I was fourteen of a massive myocardial infarction; my grandparents all suffered one or another complication of atherosclerosis. I started to drink diet drinks and skim milk, and to eat low fat, low carbohydrate, and low glycemic foods and thought, “what a good boy am I!”

In recent years I have tried to be objective about my own nutritional habits, and the more I learned, the more repentant I became. I still love meat and can still rationalize eating it. It’s natural, you know. There is even a fairly recently discovered fifth basic taste—umami (in addition to and separate from sweet, sour, bitter, and salty). Umami is a savory taste—a pleasant savory perception described by its discoverer as “delicious, and like carefully cooked meat”. So, there you are: meat is natural; its taste is part of human biology; it has been consumed for millennia. It must be good for you.

As unrepentant as I have been, I have been dragged into an understanding that my rationalized concept that meat must be good for you could well be wrong. That’s just another one of those tastes or activities that falls under the rubric of “if it is fun or tastes good or gives you pleasure; it must be bad for you.” Consider this evidence: Continue reading

Use it or lose it! Mental exercises can tone and build the brain and memory the way physical exercise tones and builds the body.
Mental exercises can slow down, halt, or even help to reverse the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).  Unfortunately, normal day to day living usually doesn’t give the neuron sharpening exercise you need.
The good news is that you’re never too old to start boosting your brainpower, and it can be fun.
The fact that mental exercises can bolster your brain has even been discovered by the press. The Daily Mail in England reports that volunteers aged 65 and over who did just ten hours of training their memory, problem solving and reaction times had mental abilities similar to people seven to fourteen years younger who hadn’t done such exercises. Studies show that staying mentally active can slash the chance of getting Alzheimer’s by fifty percent. Continue reading

Dr. Nathan Kuemmerle was a successful Hollywood psychiatrist to whom the young glitterati of the entertainment world came for treatment. The doctor helped them with prescriptions for Oxycontin, Xanax, and a lesser known medication, Adderall. By 2009, Dr. Kuemmerle was the number one prescriber of Adderall—high dosage Adderall—in the State of California. He was busy–too busy to do such mundane things as take a history or do a physical examination before he wrote prescriptions for which he was paid handsomely. He became an outstanding success and worked his way up in the Hollywood doctor-to-the-stars circuit and moved into a mansion befitting his rapidly expanding personal income. Then federal drug agents arrested him.

What is Adderall? In short, it is a psychostimulant prescription drug which benefits real patients by helping them to achieve hyperactivity and impulse control. Adderall is the generic name. There is no proprietary (brand) name anymore. Plain and simple, it is a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine—two salts of each. In all, each pill has amphetamine aspartate monohydrate, amphetamine sulfate, dextroamphetamine saccharate, and destroamphetamine sulfate. There is a legitimate use for Adderall, most commonly in children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and for other people with narcolepsy. The name is so benign and innocuous. The disease is so real and so common, and there are no real tests for the diagnosis, just the doctor’s clinical judgment. Fortunately, most prescribers are assiduously honest and careful. Unfortunately, methamphetamine addicts can find doctors who are not. Crystal meth is not on the FDA’s approved drug formulary, but Adderall is. Continue reading

Another drug that is being prescribed more commonly in recent years for control of opiate addiction symptoms is buprenorphine, which has comparable efficacy to methadone. It comes in several forms–Buprenorphine and suboxone (a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone) and Subutex. A third medication, naltrexone, is not an opioid drug like methadone and buprenorphine.  Instead, it blocks the effects of opioids such as heroin and morphine. People starting to experiment with opioids, and those in the early stages of addiction may benefit from naltrexone treatment; but unlike the other drugs, it is not of significant value in severe or chronic cases. Like methadone, naltrexone does not help addicts to stop drinking or from using drugs illicitly. It is relatively effective and safe, but not perfectly so.

Naltrexone is an opioid receptor antagonist used primarily in the management of alcohol dependence and more recently opioid addiction. Under the brand name, Revia, Depade and an extended-release form, Vivitrol. For people who have stopped drinking, Naltrexone reduces the craving for alcohol, perhaps by affecting the neural pathways in the brain where the neurotransmitter dopamine is found. In the case of opiate addiction, Naltrexone works by blocking the effects of drugs like heroin and cocaine in the brain. As an opioid receptor antagonist, Naltrexone blocks the normal reaction of the part of the brain that produces the feeling of pleasure when opioids are taken. It is commonly prescribed for 12 months for opiate addicts trying to manage drug dependence; and like methadone, it should always be done under the direct supervision of a physician. These three blogs will touch on drug treatments for opiate addiction and a warning about an increasingly popular prescription drug used for recreational and addiction purposes. It is beyond the scope of this blog to comment on all aspects of addiction, opiate addiction alone, or even all treatments of addiction.

Consider methadone first. Methadone is a long-acting synthetic opiate which has legitimate uses for treatment of chronic pain and to help opiate addicts stop using heroin and other strong narcotics. It is important to bear in mind that methadone is addicting, powerfully so, but is a lesser of evils compared to the plethora of evils associated with the more harmful opiates. Methadone is a central nervous system depressant and is not a cure for opiate addiction. Rather, it is a substitute drug that can be a tool to suppress withdrawal symptoms when quitting opiates and lessens the cravings for the powerful addicting and destructive drugs. Methadone is an effective and generally safe drug and has a long duration of action, extremely powerful effects, and very low cost. The drawback (or perhaps an indirect benefit) is that it is only prescribed for once a day use; and for a lengthy period of time, the addict must receive the drug during a daily visit to a certificated medical provider.

There is no single dose that fits all individuals or addicts. It is unsafe for experimentation by casual users. Doses must be individually determined by well-trained medical personnel, and it must be remembered that methadone maintenance is a long-term supervised treatment for opiate addictions of all types. Since it is addicting itself, many people cannot get off the drug. However, faithful patients may be able to resume normal life free of injections with filthy needles, risks of overdoses, infections, and fake or even dangerous substitutes. Continue reading

Accountant, Randolph Kennedy, is startled and alarmed when his front door is smashed open, and a horde of heavily armed ATF agents in urban combat gear burst in; he reflexively shoots the first agent dead—part of a series of actions and reactions which eventually brings down the President of the United States.

FINDERS KEEPERS, LOSERS WEEP: A Novel of Innocence Betrayed and the Search for Restitution is loosely based on actual event reported in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, May 2, 1996, by Michael D. Sorkin entitled, Federal Agents Raid St. Charles Home by Mistake. Informer Told ATF That House was Center of Illegal Guns Ring. Randolph Kennedy, his wife, Irene, and their little daughter Annie are ready to sit down for supper. Randolph is cleaning his handgun and is about to put it away. A massive crash announces a no-knock raid by a powerful force of ATV agents. Randolph wheels and fires at the first man in black he sees, killing the agent instantly. Before the melee is over, four agents, Irene, and Annie Kennedy are dead; and two agents and Randolph are wounded; their house is a total wreck; and Randolph is roughly hauled off to jail.

In the complicated aftermath of the raid, it is learned that the ATV’s confidential informant lied about the Kennedys being drug and gun runners to keep himself out of a life-sentence, and no evidence of any participation in any crime is ever found. In a civil suit, Randolph collects millions from the government and also lasting enmity at multiple levels of the law enforcement and political community. The original ATV agents in the raid refuse to accept their mistake and swear out a vendetta. Continue reading
